Fit matters more than credentials, though there are nearly seventy-five years of combined experience in these rooms. Read a little about each clinician, and if someone sounds right, ask for them by name when you reach out.

From the operating room to the therapy room.

Lori began her career as a Physician Associate — trained at Weill Cornell Medicine — operating alongside cardiac and neurosurgeons. That experience gave her a firsthand understanding of the pressures medical professionals face, and it continues to shape how she works as a therapist today. She brings a genuine appreciation for the intensity, moral weight, and toll that demanding careers and modern life can take on individuals and relationships.

Lori works well with intellectually curious clients who are ready to do deeper work and explore what matters most to them. Her approach is warm, direct, and supportive, drawing on attachment theory, psychodynamic thought, and Jungian psychology. She uses tools including Circle of Security, AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), Brainspotting, and Motivational Interviewing.

Having trained at the Ainsworth Attachment Clinic, Lori's approach is relational and attachment-focused. She believes our patterns — the ones that serve us and the ones that don't — take root in our earliest relationships, and that understanding them is often the first step toward change.

Outside the therapy room, Lori enjoys gardening, dance, animals, traveling, and historic preservation, and is a cofounder of a local real estate investment company. She's also in a medical marriage herself, so she understands some of these pressures firsthand. She's traded the operating room for the therapy room, but the proximity to what matters most — the heart, the mind — remains.

Relationships and community at the heart of the work.

Kelsey's work has centered on supporting individuals and families through life's stressors and transitions, most of it in community-based settings where she responded to a wide range of needs and circumstances. She began as a Refugee Foster Care Case Manager with Bethany Christian Services, and later served as Social Services Coordinator and Victim Advocate with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, responding alongside police officers to service and crisis calls.

That work taught her to meet people where they are, listen closely, de-escalate stressful situations, and build goals around what each client needs. Most of all, it deepened her understanding of how much relationships and community matter to mental health and overall well-being.

Kelsey now brings that experience to her work as a therapist, drawing on a range of therapeutic modalities to fit each client. She works with people across all ages and stages of life, taking a holistic, strengths-based approach grounded in genuine collaboration. She sees therapy as valuable not only in times of crisis, but as a proactive way to better understand yourself, navigate life's challenges, and strengthen your relationships with others.

Kelsey holds a Master of Social Work from Spring Arbor University, a Master's in Family Life Education from Western Michigan University, and a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Ithaca College. She is also a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE).

Outside the office, Kelsey enjoys music, poetry, and time outdoors. She can often be found walking, running, or rollerblading around town, or out exploring with her beloved dog, Mercy.

Ten years of meeting people where they are.

Victoria brings a decade of experience in mental health, most recently as Clinical Director at the Elizabeth Upjohn Community Healing Center, where she spent six years and rose from outpatient therapist to director of clinical operations.

She began her career as an Intensive Home-Based Therapist with Starr Commonwealth in Calhoun County, working with high-risk youth and families, then joined InterAct's Assertive Community Treatment team, providing intensive community-based support to individuals with severe and persistent mental illness and co-occurring addiction.

At CHC, she led initiatives to improve therapist retention, build community partnerships, strengthen quality assurance, and expand school-based therapy contracts, while significantly improving audit outcomes.

Victoria specializes in substance use and addiction treatment, trauma, anxiety, depression, and family dynamics, drawing on cognitive-behavioral, dialectical, and motivational interviewing approaches tailored to each client.

She holds a Master's degree in Interpersonal Practice from the University of Michigan School of Social Work and is a Certified Clinical Supervisor with a hands-on approach to training and mentorship. She believes good care is built on collaboration — systems that support clients and clinicians alike.

Outside the office, Victoria coaches soccer, dances, and keeps busy with her pets and puzzles.

Five certifications across anxiety, addiction, and new parenthood.

Tiffany Scurto has spent nineteen years in clinical practice and holds five credentials, each earned in a different corner of the work: Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CAADC), Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), Perinatal Mental Health Certified (PMH-C), and Clinical Certified Anxiety Treatment Professional (CCATP). Few clinicians carry specialty training in substance use, anxiety, and the perinatal period at once. Tiffany does, and it means the person in front of her rarely has to be sent elsewhere.

She earned her Master of Social Work at the Wayne State University School of Social Work and was certified in addiction counseling within a year of graduating. Nineteen years on, she is still adding to that training — her anxiety-treatment certification is one of the newest. Her career has run on two tracks at once: more than a decade in community mental health with Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan, and, since 2023, her own practice, First Step Counseling, PLLC. Across both, she has worked with adults at every stage, from new parents to clients well into later life, individually and as couples.

Tiffany's clients tend to arrive worn down and caught in patterns they can name but cannot move: depression, anxiety, mood instability, anger, stress, substance use, a relationship under strain, the hard months after a birth. Her work is to find what sits underneath, make the pattern visible, and give you something concrete to do about it. You leave a session with feedback and strategies you can use before the next one.

Her method is wide and deliberately chosen — cognitive-behavioral work on the link between thought and behavior, acceptance and commitment for what will not be argued away, dialectical behavior therapy for regulating intense emotion, and mindfulness and solution-focused approaches when the need is immediate. She also traces how early experience shaped the way a person thinks and reacts today, so the change holds after the work ends.

Focus areas

  • Anxiety
  • Substance use and addiction
  • Pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum
  • Depression
  • Mood instability
  • Stress and overwhelm
  • Couples
  • Women's issues

Clinical Mental Health Counselor

Sixteen years of steadiness in high-acuity rooms.

James Triumph brings sixteen years of frontline mental health experience to his practice, beginning as a direct care worker at Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital, where he mastered the art of crisis de-escalation and restoring calm to high-acuity situations. That foundation, paired with training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI), now informs his work not only with clients but with the families and loved ones who walk alongside them.

James works with individuals seeking to reclaim their lives from anger, anxiety, depression, and addiction, drawing on cognitive-behavioral, dialectical, and rational emotive behavior therapies — including advanced certification in DBT In-Depth Training and Applied Practice. He holds that much of our struggle is a matter of perception — that life's battles are often fought and won in the mind — and helps clients recognize the power they hold over their own thinking.

A lifelong scholar, James holds three master's degrees from Central Michigan University, in English Language and Literature, Management Information Systems, and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. He is a published author across poetry, philosophy, and literary criticism, including a self-help book for readers who sense there is more to life than what they're currently living, and he speaks widely on questions of meaning and personal growth. Outside the practice, he can be found at the chess board, on the soccer field, or in conversation with anyone willing to ask hard questions and follow them wherever they lead.

Presence does most of the work.

The following was translated from Juniper's barking with AI, and should not be taken literally.

Juniper holds a bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature from Yale, where she wrote a well-received senior thesis on the pastoral tradition and spent four years perfecting the art of falling asleep in the reading room without being asked to leave.

Before turning to clinical work she spent three years in management consulting, advising firms on organizational culture. She left the field the day she realized every recommendation she had ever made could be summarized as "go outside more" and "sit with people when they are sad."

A stint with the Peace Corps in rural Ecuador followed, where she worked on community water projects and became fluent in enthusiastic greeting. She returned to Michigan convinced that presence does most of the work, which is more or less the practice's whole philosophy.

Juniper is now completing her therapy dog certification. She sits in on sessions by invitation only, and clients are always asked first.

Ask about Juniper when you schedule.

Sara Mattocks

Sara Mattocks

Billing & insurance

Sara handles billing and insurance for the practice through Solutions Medical Billing, the firm she founded in 1986. She can answer questions about your benefits, your coverage, and your statements.

She trained in pharmacology and was working in a hospital when her sister-in-law, opening an internal medicine practice, asked her to take on the billing. She has watched the medical and billing fields change across nearly forty years, from claims typed by hand to everything that came after.

Before starting the business she supervised business services and billing for a large home care agency, taught medical billing and medical terminology at Ross Medical and Business Trade School, and managed a large pediatric practice. Since 2018 she has worked solely with mental health practitioners.

Billing & insurance

Donna works alongside Sara at Solutions Medical Billing, verifying benefits before a first session and following claims through to the end. She joined the firm in 2018. She manages the documents platform, assists in billing, and answers all billing inquiries.

She brings administrative experience from three decades of work: the public affairs department at the Budd Company, the office of a construction company, real estate, and the management of a group mental health therapy practice. She is at her best untangling complicated problems, which is useful when the problem is an insurance company.

Mr. Darcy

Mr. Darcy

Office companion

Mr. Darcy attends morning staff meetings, where he offers his sage advice on the day ahead and listens a great deal more than he speaks. He has a sense for when the room has been working too long without stopping, and he makes the case for a walk, or for a snack, with more persistence than anyone else on staff.

His contribution is mostly a matter of timing. Practices like this one run on attention, and attention needs tending, so the small interruptions he insists on tend to be the reason the afternoon goes better than the morning. He is a steady presence in the office and a reliable argument for taking a break.
